Abstract
Description
Antibiotic resistance poses a threat to public health, particularly in urinary tract infections
(UTIs), in which Escherichia coli is the most frequent etiological agent. Therefore, the
search for natural therapeutic alternatives is relevant given the increase in resistant
bacterial strains. This study evaluated the antibacterial efficacy of ethanolic thyme extract
(Thymus vulgaris) against Escherichia coli and its potential application in the
complementary management of urinary tract infections. A descriptive and comparative
design was employed through an in vitro assay with three replicates per treatment. The
methodology was based on the disk diffusion method (Kirby–Bauer), using Mueller–
Hinton agar and a standardized bacterial inoculum. The data were analyzed using analysis
of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). The evaluated variables were
inhibition zone diameter (mm) and percentage of relative inhibition (PRI). Thyme extract
concentrations of 100% and 75% showed the greatest antibacterial effects, with mean
inhibition zones of 31.72 mm and 25.77 mm and PRI values of 96.26% and 81.63%,
respectively. These results were significantly higher than those obtained with
nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin, which produced mean inhibition zones of 6.75 mm and
3.72 mm, respectively. It is concluded that Thymus vulgaris extract exhibits antibacterial
activity against E. coli, suggesting its potential as a source of bioactive compounds for
developing complementary strategies to prevent and treat urinary tract infections caused
by resistant bacteria.
