Abstract
Description
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with a significant public health impact due to its high prevalence and the complications it causes, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease. In Latin America and Ecuador, its frequency continues to rise, highlighting the need to strengthen educational and preventive interventions across all levels of care. In this context, nursing plays a fundamental role in promoting healthy habits, achieving metabolic control, and preventing complications in individuals with T2DM. The study under review was conducted as a descriptive literature review of articles published between 2020 and 2026. Scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, LILACS, Cochrane, and Google Scholar were used to search for information, alongside official documents from the WHO, PAHO, and the ADA. Through a selection process based on inclusion, exclusion, and methodological assessment criteria, 15 articles were selected, allowing findings to be organized into seven categories: therapeutic education, dietary guidance, promotion of physical activity, strengthening of self-care, prevention of complications, continuous monitoring, and the use of digital tools. The results show that nursing interventions are most effective when they combine personalized education, motivational support, continuous guidance, and strategies tailored to the patient's context. Therapeutic education improves knowledge, self-efficacy, and treatment adherence; nutritional guidance promotes glucose control; physical activity helps reduce sedentary behavior and improve insulin sensitivity; and self-care contributes to disease monitoring and the prevention of foot injuries. It is concluded that nursing is key to the comprehensive management of T2DM, as it involves not only educating but also supporting, guiding, and reinforcing healthy behaviors. Nursing practice contributes to improving quality of life, reducing chronic complications, and promoting care that is more humane, continuous, and effective.
